Want to become a Volunteer Firefighter?
Being a CFA Firefighter is a greatly rewarding experience. We work closely with the community and help people on their best and worst days. We are a diverse group of volunteers and we welcome anyone to apply with us.
Who are we looking for?
We are primarily looking for people who:
- Live or work within 5 minutes of our Fire Station in The Avenue, Ferntree Gully
- Have daytime availability, particularly on weekdays
- Are physically and emotionally capable of participating in strenuous activities
What do our Firefighters do?
Our Firefighters are committed to:
- Responding to a diverse range of emergency calls
- Regularly attending training sessions, held on Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings
- Attending other activities including Brigade meetings and Community events
The Recruitment Process…
There are a number of steps involved in becoming a Volunteer Firefighter. Our Brigade will commit to helping you along the journey. These are the basic steps:
1. Application
Complete the expression of interest form through the CFA website and our members will review your application.
2. Introduction
We will invite you down to the station to meet you, and give you some more information about joining our Brigade.
3. Interview
You will have a further chat with our officers to see if you are a good fit to join our Brigade as a Firefighter.
4. Training
You will begin the General Firefighter (GFF) course, running over several months, and learn skills as a Firefighter.
5. Assessment
You will complete a theory and practical assessment to test the skills you learned during the GFF course.
6. Turnout
After completing GFF, you will be a fully qualified Firefighter and can begin to turnout to emergency calls.
7. Experience
You will now build experience on the fireground and regularly train with our Brigade to maintain your skills.
8. Further Pathways
Over time, you can gain more advanced training such as Structural Firefighting, HazMat, first aid and more.
