Being a CFA member is a greatly rewarding experience. We work closely with the community and help people on their best and worst days. We are a diverse group of volunteers and we welcome anyone to apply with us. If you have spare time each week we’d love to hear from you! See volunteering options below.
Become a Volunteer Firefighter
CFA Firefighters (or operational members) are volunteers who respond to firecalls, and train weekly to maintain skills. We are particularly interested in people who live close to The Avenue in Ferntree Gully and who have availability during weekdays. You don’t have to be available 24/7.
Join Us in a Support Role
CFA Support (non-operational) members are volunteers who can help maintain the administrative side of our brigade. They do not fight fires but are vital to our ongoing success. Various support roles may include community outreach, coordinating events, fundraising, catering and more.

What it takes to become a Volunteer Firefighter…
Training
All operational CFA members must undergo the General Firefighter (GFF) course. This typically runs for 4-6 months and contains practical and theory training that teaches members about fire behaviour, firefighting methods and safety procedures. After graduating to Firefighters, members will continue to train weekly with the Brigade.
Commitment
Being a Firefighter requires a certain level of commitment. The CFA is called upon to respond day and night. Additionally, we run weekly training sessions and bi-monthly brigade meetings. As volunteers, we don’t expect you to make every session or event. Our families and jobs always come first, and we build our CFA lives around that.
Fitness
Firefighting can be physically demanding work, operating tools and carrying around equipment on the fireground. Dealing with emergency situations can also be mentally strenuous at times. A level of fitness is required, but your training will help to prepare you. No one is forced to perform tasks they are not comfortable with.
